Sew Shiok free sewing workshop at Our Tampines Hub, 17 Oct 2026

Free Sew Shiok sewing workshop at Our Tampines Hub Level 2 on 17 Oct 2026, 2-5pm. Sign up at go.gov.sg/othxrksewshiok.

Sew Shiok is back at Our Tampines Hub on Saturday, 17 October 2026. The free sewing afternoon runs 2pm to 5pm at the Space on Level 2. Doors open at 1.30pm. Sign up at go.gov.sg/othxrksewshiok because the slots go fast.

This is not the monthly Repair Kopitiam Sunday at OTH, where you book a broken fan or kettle. Sew Shiok is a one-off sit-down session. Repair Kopitiam, Tampines @Famous, the National Environment Agency, and S² Impact are running it together. You learn stitches you can reuse on clothes, bags, and camping kit, then you make a chicken plushie to take home.

What the afternoon actually covers

Repair Kopitiam lists fabric repair as one of three public coaching tracks, next to electric and mechanical. The fabric table is for ripped shirts, stuck zips, and missing buttons. Coaches do not swap a whole zip for you. They show you how far a mend can go, then you do the work. Sew Shiok compresses that into three hours with a starter project so first-timers leave with a finished object, not just a lecture.

Bring a jacket with a loose hem if you already have one. If you do not, the chicken plushie is the fallback. It is a small stuffed toy, not a sewing-machine exam. The point is a straight stitch, a closing seam, and the confidence to try a button at home next week.

Admission is free. The FormSG link behind the go.gov.sg short URL is how OTH is taking names. The Facebook poster from Repair Kopitiam on 2 October 2026 still says slots are limited. Walk-ins are a gamble. Register first, then turn up at 1.30pm so you are seated before 2pm.

Level 2 Space, Lobby B or Lobby F

OTH is a messy building if you treat it like a fashion mall. The Space on Level 2 is a community room, not a shop unit. Repair Kopitiam's own post tells you to use Lift Lobby B or Lobby F. Do not wander in from the hawker on Level 1 and assume you will see a sign from every corridor. Ask at the PA counter if the lifts confuse you.

The hub sits at 1 Tampines Walk, 528523, next to Tampines Bus Interchange. Tampines MRT (EW2 / DT32) is the station. Walk through the interchange, not through Tampines Mall, if you want the shortest line. FairPrice is in the basement. Kopitiam on Level 1 runs roughly 6am to 10pm, stall by stall. Eat before 2pm if you want a proper lunch. The Round Market on Street 11 is a different hawker. Most stalls there are done by mid-afternoon.

Library hours that day are 10am to 9pm. The pool is open unless it is a Tuesday. Saturday 17 October is not a Tuesday, so swim after you sew if you brought kit. Do not count on a 24-hour hawker. That blog line is wrong.

How this sits next to the monthly clinic

RKS@Tampines is listed on repairkopitiam.sg as a last-Sunday clinic at 1 Tampines Walk, 10am to 4pm. The next island-wide Repair Kopitiam date on the homepage as of 11 October 2026 is Sunday 25 October, with booking from 9 October noon through 22 October. That Sunday is for pre-approved barang: fans, irons, kettles, rice cookers. Phones, laptops, and bicycles stay out because those trades already exist. Microwaves stay out for safety.

CNA reported in 2024 that Repair Kopitiam grew from one Jurong site in 2014 to a network of heartland tables, with coaches teaching rather than fixing on your behalf. DesignSingapore's 2024 profile of co-founder Veerappan Swaminathan put the same rule in print: you repair with them, not for them. Sew Shiok is that rule applied to fabric. NEA is on the poster because mending is waste policy, not a hobby class with a cute chicken.

S² Impact and Tampines @Famous are the neighbourhood partners on the same poster. If you already volunteer with either group, you will recognise faces. If you do not, you still sign up on the same FormSG. The WhatsApp booking number on Repair Kopitiam's site, 8152 4675, is for the monthly clinics. Do not use it as a substitute for the Sew Shiok form.

Who this is for, and who should skip it

Go if you live in Tampines, Pasir Ris, Simei, or Bedok and you have a pile of clothes you keep meaning to mend. Go if you have never used a needle and want a Saturday that does not cost a course fee. Skip it if you need a full zip replacement, a sewing-machine service, or a SkillsFuture fabric-repair certificate. Repair Kopitiam runs longer fabric courses elsewhere. This afternoon is a taster.

Children can sit with an adult. The plushie is the reason kids will stay. The mending table is the reason adults should. If the form is already closed when you click it, wait for the 25 October Sunday clinic and book a fabric slot there instead of turning up angry on the 17th.

After 5pm you are back in the hub: gym until 10pm, hawker until the last stall packs up, Town Square if there is a match. Masjid Darul Ghufran is next door on Avenue 5 if Friday prayers are your other weekly stop. Sew Shiok is a Saturday fill, not a replacement for the mosque, the Round Market breakfast, or Eco Green before 7pm.
